The NBA said on Wednesday (all dates US time) that Draymond Green, the star of the Golden State Warriors, has been “suspended indefinitely” following his altercation with Jusuf Nurkic of Phoenix, which resulted in his third ejection of the season.
Given his “repeated history of unsportsmanlike acts,” the NBA said in a statement that Green has been given an indefinite suspension. It also stated that before he is permitted to play again, he will “need to meet certain league and team conditions.”
The NBA very seldom suspends players for an infinite period of time; instead, punishments are usually for a set number of games.
Some players who have recently received lengthy suspensions include Memphis’s Ja Morant, who was given a 25-game ban in June after being seen on camera flashing a gu𝚗 online, and Miles Bridges of Charlotte, who was given a 30-game ban due to accusations of domestic abuse.
Green received a flagrant charge for striking Suns forward Jusuf Nurkic in the head during Tuesday’s 119-116 away loss to the Warriors.
The four-time NBA champion later expressed regret to Nurkic, saying he had slapped the Bosnian by mistake after swinging his arm in an attempt to draw a foul call because he thought Nurkic had been unjustly held back.
“I made contact with him because I thought he was pulling my hip,” said Green. “I was swinging a way to sell the call.”
“I don’t usually apologize for things I meаnt to do, but I really apologize to Jusuf because I didn’t meаn to Һit him,” the speaker said.
But in response to the incident, Nurkic was harsh, stating that Green “needs help.”
“What is the situation with him? “I’m not sure,” Nurkic remarked on Tuesday. “In my opinion, that brother needs assistance.”
The incident occurred just a few weeks after Green was suspended for five games following his second expulsion of the season, which occurred on November 14 during the Warriors’ loss to the Timberwolves. Green had seized Rudy Gobert in a headlock.
Green has a history of run-ins with NBA disciplinary chiefs; this is his second ban of the season.
The 33-year-old was suspended during the playoffs in April after stamping on Domantas Sabonis of the Sacramento Kings. He was also shown the door during the Warriors’ loss to Cleveland earlier in November.
In October 2022, Green managed to avoid a ban from the Warriors following a pre-season practice altercation with teammate Jordan Poole.
The event was later called the “biggest crisis that we’ve ever had” by Warriors coach Steve Kerr, but the organization opted to penalize Green rather than suspend him internally.
After a cоnfrоntatiоn with Brandon Clarke during Golden State’s 2021–2022 playoff series against the Memphis Grizzlies, he was ejected.
In addition, he received a notorious suspension for a low blоw on LeBron James during game five of the 2016 NBA Finals over the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Cleveland won at Golden State en route to winning the championship in seven games, despite trailing 3-1 in the best-of-seven series. The flagrant foul resulted in a one-game suspension.
But over the years, Warriors coach Kerr has emerged as one of Green’s most ardent supporters, insisting that the four-time NBA All-Star has been a crucial component of the team’s success in the last ten years.
Earlier this year, Kerr declared, “I’ve said many times we don’t have a single championship without Draymond Green.”
That is the actuality. Over the years, he has stepped over the line, and you know, that’s part of it. We’re going to take Draymond to task and figҺt alongside him every single day of the week.
