Asiahn is engaged!
The Grammy-nominated musician and Karma’s World star, 36, and Jay Shalé will head to the altar after a double proposal.
Asiahn, who has written songs for artists like Miley Cyrus and Jennifer Lopez, first proposed to Shalé last November after a year of dating. Then, last week, Jay popped the question in a second surprise proposal.
“I proposed to her on my birthday, but she was under the impression that we were just going to get married because we were both women and I didn’t have a ring,” Asiahn said. “I recently moved from Los Angeles to Atlanta because my mom was very sick and I had to get there quickly, so I didn’t get a chance to have a going away party or anything. My family chose to have just one person living in L.A. So Jay and my friend Fawn wanted to have a going away party.
She continued, “I was thinking of inviting my friends to a party to hang out and finding out they all knew for weeks that it was a surprise proposal! I was so forgetful. I bought my food.” part of the proposition. When I proposed to her, I was surrounded by the people she loved the most, so she was sure to do the same. It was magical and my heart was full.
For Shalé, who admits she’s not “the best planner,” it was important that the couple’s second proposal was also “very, very special.”
“I knew I wanted to return to Los Angeles to the people who meant the most to her,” she said.
One of those important people was Leslyn, a friend of Asiahn’s, who made the Jan. 25 proposal even more memorable by creating heart-shaped flower arrangements from scratch.
Shalé added: “I want Asiahn to know that she will always be treated with care and I hope she can see the time and care I put into making this evening special. »
Another important detail is the proposal time that Shalé chose to represent the date of the couple’s first interaction: October 24, 2022. The DJ “made sure to propose at 10:24 p.m. exactly on time,” said Asiahn.
The couple first connected on social media in 2019.
“I just released my second project Love Train 2 and she’s a DJ and loves my music,” Asiahn told PEOPLE. “So we supported each other from a distance.”
“At that moment, it was like love at first sight for both of us,” she recalls. “We were on the road after our last relationship failed, but the universe said, ‘Everyone goes home!’ » »
Shalé, now a DJ for the WNBA team Atlanta Dream, said her relationship with Asiahn was good from the start.
“It sounds a bit cliché, but when you know, you know. And from our first conversations and our time together, I knew she was different in the best way possible,” she said.
“She brought joy and new aspects to my family that I had never seen. She was a great friend to all her friends, completely selfless,” she said, adding that “there are so many things I could use to describe her but there aren’t enough amazing ones. to describe it.”
Shalé added that Asiahn “came into my life at a time when I didn’t think I’d be lucky enough to find the love I thought I deserved” — and she “completely changed my mind.”
Jay added: “I’m so grateful that we chose each other and I look forward to what this next chapter has in store for us.”
