Pierpaolo Lazzarini of Lazzarini Design Studio is renowned for his exceptional and one-of-a-kind watercraft inventions, and “Avanguardia,” a concept boat shaped like a swan, is the best of them. Because of the way its control tower is positioned—like the head of a swan—the name implies “vanguard.” Which Japanese comic from the 1970s did this mistakenly take inspiration from? Avanguardia can accommodate up to 60 passengers and is divided into 5 decks.

The control tower known as the “swan head” is what gives this 137-meter-long, nearly absurd boat its maneuverability. The control tower’s ability to separate from the “neck” and change into an additional 16-meter boat is another intriguing feature. The movable control tower can move Avanguardia by lowering itself straight into the middle of the vessel while it is in motion.
