Four-time NBA champion Stephen Curry decided early on that he wouldn’t pressure his children to play sports.
Reason? Curry just wants his kids to have fun while they’re kids.
“We’re all backyard sports right now,” Curry told PEOPLE. “Nothing too neat. Especially for Canon, the boy is only 5 years old. So we have a lot of time left. He’s the type of person who loves sports. But his ability to concentrate is comparable to that of a 5 year old child.
The NBA star shares daughters Riley, 11, Ryan, 8, and son Canon, 5, with wife Ayesha Curry.
Curry uses time spent playing with his children to discipline them.
“What’s more important is building their confidence and their ability to find joy in everything they do,” he said. “I think that’s a big part of kids today, who don’t feel as much pressure to succeed or keep up with their peers.”
“I just try to make sure that whatever they do, they have fun,” he continued. “A lot happens to them every day and there is a lot of pressure. So I try to make sure they enjoy being kids and find joy in everything they do.
However, Curry’s oldest child, Riley, began to think like his father when it came to sports.
“For the most part, I introduced them to almost every sport,” Curry told PEOPLE in July. “And Riley, she really loves volleyball right now, and actually this year a light bulb went off, so she was so excited to come to practice and dribble the ball or pass the ball in the house and all that.”
“So she found something she loved, she was passionate about it and she loved doing it,” he said.
In 2023, Curry and the Golden State Warriors fell short in the playoffs, losing the series to the Lakers 4-2.
Known as one of the greatest shooters in NBA history, Curry scored 29.4 points per game last season and had 27 points against the Phoenix Suns on Tuesday night.
This season, Curry is ready to lead the Warriors to the NBA championship.
Movieguide previously reported on Curry:
Curry credits his “crazy belief” for his incredible record of 2,974 three-pointers in 13 seasons and 511 games fewer than Allen.
“I’ve had crazy faith since I started playing basketball and to think, like this moment, that it’s possible and to be able to do it again in front of Ray… it’s so special that I now have one “Curry said after the game. TNT.
After the game, Curry received a jersey bearing the number “2,974” from Allen and former record holder Reggie Miller.
“It’s very special,” Curry added. “I’ve been thinking about this number for a long time. I even have (number) on my shoes. In the history of basketball, it’s pretty special.
“These two legends – I watched them grow up and I learned what it meant to shoot the ball because of them and my dad… it’s come full circle,” Curry said. “I’m lucky – really lucky.”
