AP news site has just reported that the Charity Commission has discovered violations in the activities of the charity organization Fashion for Relief founded by famous supermodel Naomi Campbell.
According to the Charity Commission, this organization only used 8.5% of the money raised from fashion events for charitable purposes in the 6-year period, starting from 2016. In addition, this organization often failed to fulfill its promised payment commitments to organizations supporting the disadvantaged and children. Among them is Save the Children.
During that time, this organization raised nearly 4.8 million pounds (over 158 billion VND) from a series of fashion shows, but only transferred 389,000 pounds (over 12 billion VND) to charities. Thus, this organization spent about 4.41 million pounds (about 145 billion VND) for the wrong purposes.
Investigators from the Charity Commission also said that Fashion for Relief’s financial management and record keeping were chaotic, as the organisation often failed to keep invoices, documents and receipts for important meetings. It also had no full-time staff, so it had to seek outside advice. It even paid €14,800 (about 406 million VND) for a plane to take its director of trustees and an anonymous donor to a fundraising event in Cannes in May 2018.
Naomi Campbell is also accused of benefiting from tens of thousands of pounds through health and beauty services, luxury hotel rooms, flights, personal security and even cigarettes from the fund. Not stopping there, during the event in Cannes, the organization also paid 8,000 Euros (about 219 million VND) for Naomi Campbell’s spa treatments, booked 6 nights in a hotel room costing 3,000 Euros/day (82 million VND) and spent more than 4,000 Euros (109 million VND) on bodyguard and personal security services.
As for Naomi Campbell, the supermodel said she did not manage the organization but left it to a legal officer. The supermodel affirmed that everything she did and all the money she donated was used for charity purposes. Despite her statement, Naomi Campbell was still banned from being a charity trustee for 5 years in England and Wales.
Fashion for Relief was founded by Naomi Campbell in 2005 with the purpose of raising charity funds through fashion auctions. The organization’s first goal is to address poverty and support disadvantaged young people. Fashion for Relief began being investigated in November 2021. The organization subsequently became insolvent and declared liquidation in March 2024.
